On Friday, the Jasper Bulldogs traveled to Shepherd for their first district game of the 2019 season. The Pirates chose to kick off first and immediately tried an on-side kick with a high short kick that almost resulted in a disaster for the Bulldogs as two players collided trying to field the kick.

After a scramble for the ball, it was Jasper that came out of the pile with the ball at their own 31 yard line. After being tackled behind the line on the first play, the Bulldogs marched down the field on runs by Mon Tavien Hunt and Reggie Shaw in three plays that covered 71 yards for the first score with Hunt finishing the drive with a 20 yard run. Alex Mijares completed the drive with his first of 6 extra points.

On the kickoff, the Bulldogs were able to strip the ball from the Shepherd player and takeover passion on the 46 yard line. In four short plays, the bulldogs scored again this time on a pass to Bryce Barbay so that with less than 3 minutes gone in the game, the Bulldogs led 14-0 after the Mijares extra point.

The Bulldogs held the Pirates on their first possession to only 8 plays and took over on their own 41 yard line. This time it took only one play for the Bulldogs as quarterback Trashawn Adams rolled right and found a wide open Barbay who trotted into the end zone. After the PAT the Bulldogs led 21-0 with 4:29 still left in the 1st quarter.

The scoring began to slow at that point with the Bulldogs Terrien Collins intercepting on the Pirates next passion but the offense stalling after only 4 plays.

To begin the second quarter, the Bulldogs moved quickly from their own 30 yard line down the field in only 4 plays with the long runs by Carl Limbrick, pass to Barbay and another 15 yard run to cap off the 70 yard drive.

With a little over 8 minutes left in the half, Shepherd was able to mount a drive with a combination of passes, penalties and a quarterback run to score on the Bulldogs to bring the score to 28- 7 in favor of the Bulldogs.

After trading several possessions, Alex Mijares punted from the 42 yard line on Shepherd’s end of the field with the wind behind his back and pinned the Pirates at their own 2 yard line. It looked like the Pirates were going to get out of the shadow of their on goal post but on a third down play, Avion Bennett broke through the line and sacked the Shepherd quarterback for a safety to bring the score to 30-7 at halftime.

During the second half, the Bulldogs came out hot on the cold evening to score twice on their first two possessions. After holding Shepherd to a 3 and out, the Bulldogs scored on a 3 play drive with Reggie Shaw getting the score from 6 yards out and with the PAT the score was 37-7. The Bulldogs were able to recover a fumble after a deep kick off by Mijares at the 23 yard line in Shepherd territory and after only 3 plays Hunt ran the ball in for another score. After the PAT by Mijares, the score was 44-7.

Jasper seemed to relax a little at this point and the Pirates were able to drive on the Bulldogs and were able to score with 3:34 left in the 3rd quarter to bring the score to 44-14. The Pirates were successful on an on-side kick but the Bulldogs held and the scoring continued on their next drive as Limbrick ran the ball in from the 8 after a 3 play drive covering 51 yards. Miares kicked the PAT and the score was 51-14 to end the 3rd quarter.

The final score of the night would take place early in the 4th quarter as Shepherd drove on the Bulldogs from their own 26 on 5 plays to score and bring the score to the final of 51-21.

The Bulldogs are now 1-0 in district play and will face Huntington in Jasper on Friday, October 18th in their Homecoming game.
