The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department has announced that a father and son who moved from California to Alto a year ago were arrested on Wednesday on multiple charges of sexually assaulting children in California, in cases going all the way back to 1961.
Cherokee County officials say that the investigation was conducted by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department in California along with the Department of Homeland Security, and it all began when evidence was discovered left behind in a California home after the two had moved to Texas.
The department said that the father, Theodore Smith, was arrested in Alto and he has been charged with 34 counts of lewd act of a child under 14 with force, and 2 counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 14. His bond is set at $7 million. The department said the son, James Smith, was arrested while on a trip to California and he has been charged with 1 count of sexual assault of a child. His bond amount was not listed.
