For the second year in a row, the annual Martin Luther King Day March in Jasper has been cancelled, and just like last year it’s due to an increasing number of Coronavirus cases. Word of the cancellation came on Tuesday from Booker T. Hunter, the President of the Jasper chapter of the N.A.A.C.P.

Here in Jasper County, as of Tuesday there were 194 active cases of the illness, 119 of which were in Jasper. That’s a little less than the numbers from exactly one year ago when we had 271 active cases in Jasper County, and 90 of them were here in Jasper.

MLK Day this year falls on Monday, January 17th. The holiday celebrates the January 15th, 1929 birthday of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King.
