The 20th Annual Jasper Youth Trout Derby will be held on Saturday, January 22nd from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Sandy Creek Park Pond on Marvin Hancock Drive in Jasper.

The event is organized and hosted each year by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Inland Fisheries Division.

In preparation for this event, the pond was stocked with 1,800 rainbow trout on Tuesday. The larger fish were placed into the pond with a net while the smaller fish were transferred to the pond by way of a large hose.

The City of Jasper prohibits fishing the pond leading up to the Trout Derby in order for the youth to have their chance at catching the fish. However, both the City of Jasper and Texas Parks & Wildlife encourage fishing after the event because the trout are cold water fish and they will die once the water reaches a certain temperature in the spring.

No pre-registration is required. Prizes will be awarded in three different age categories for the largest trout, smallest trout, and largest other species caught. Drawings for additional prizes will take place at the conclusion of the event. Participants must bring their own fishing equipment and stringers. Fishing bait (kernel corn) and terminal tackle (hooks, singers, and Bobbers) will be provided. No fishing licenses are required for youth 16 years of age or younger. The daily bag limit for Rainbow Trout is five fish and participants are welcome to harvest up to five trout at the event. Parents and grandparents are welcome to fish also, but their fish will not be weighed in.
