Great turnout for 2018 Meet the Bulldogs

The 2018 athletic teams, coaches and trainers, along with the band and cheerleaders were introduced to an enthusiastic crowd at Bulldog Stadium on Thursday evening during the annual Meet the Bulldogs event.

The was a great turnout of the Bulldog Nation at Jasper High School, despite the heat and humidity.

Athletic Director and Football Head Coach Darrell Barbay said he was very pleased with the size and enthusiasm of the crowd.

Kirbyville man was one of two people arrested in an Orange County drug raid

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department says a Kirbyville man was one of two people who were arrested during a late Wednesday night drug raid at a home in Vidor.

According to Criminal Investigator Janois Strause Grizzaffi, officers from the Orange and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Departments along with the Orange Police Department executed a search and arrest warrant at a home in the 200 block of Frazier Street shortly before midnight.

Chase began in Angelina County, ended in Hemphill, two in custody

A high speed pursuit that began in Angelina County late Wednesday evening and involved three different counties finally ended in Hemphill when the suspects lost control of the vehicle.

A Sabine County Sheriff’s Department press release says the chase went through San Augustine County and then entered Sabine County shortly after 10:00 on Highway 103, and then onto Highway 121 and into the city limits of Hemphill.

Woman flown via medical helicopter from Erin after apparent suicide attempt

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said on Thursday that a person was flown by a medical helicopter from the Erin Community after they apparently attempted to commit suicide.

The helicopter landed at about 4:30 at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 252 and 1005.

Ground breaking ceremony held to start the Highway 87 project from High Island to Rollover Pass

State and county officials along with local citizens gathered on Thursday afternoon near High Island to officially break ground on a $21 million project to both raise Highway 87 between High Island and Rollover Pass, and also to make safety improvements to a 90 degree curve where Highway 124 becomes Highway 87 and continues westward to Port Bolivar.

The Texas Department of Transportation recently announced plans to begin the project of raising a seven mile stretch of the highway from its current level of 5.5 feet above sea level to 7.5 feet.

Friday night LIGHTS, students with CAMERAS, and ACTION on the big screen

A video board nearly the size of a school bus has been erected at the football stadium at Jasper High School, and now technicians will go into the process of wiring the big-screen to a computer system.

If all goes as planned, throughout the football season Jasper football fans, as well as spectators with the visiting teams, will be able to catch a glimpse of themselves on the screen. Meanwhile, if they miss a big play, a replay of what they missed will be coming in just a few seconds.

Game Wardens search for boater on Lake Sam Rayburn

The volunteers of the Jasper County Emergency Corps were placed on standby late Wednesday afternoon as officers from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife searched for a person who was said to be disorientated in a kayak on nearby Lake Seam Rayburn.

It was later reported that the elderly male had been located and that the search had been called off.

Judge Billingsly says he never saw evidence accusing Stephenson of arson

KJAS Radio News reported late Wednesday afternoon that Jasper County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Ronnie Billingsly had declined to charge a local man with arson and instead only charged him with public intoxication. However, Judge Billingsly contacted KJAS on Wednesday evening and said that was not true. According to Billingsly, he heard that Jared Cole Stephenson had been accused of setting a home on fire but he said that accusation or evidence was not presented to him when he arraigned Stephenson on Tuesday.

The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department and other emergency crews were dispatched to a home on County Road 190, just off of U.S. Highway 190, near the Beech Grove Community shortly before 9:00 on Saturday evening, when it was reported that a home was on fire.

U.S. District Judge Ron Clark recently ordered the release of numerous letters that were written to him in support of Walter, Rosie, and Anita Diggles, and KJAS News obtained those letters on Wednesday.

No injuries from collision involving a log truck and a pickup truck in Sabine County

Both drivers walked away uninjured following a Wednesday afternoon collision in Sabine County involving a fully loaded log truck and a pickup truck that was towing a tractor on a trailer.

Daily News & More is reporting that it happened on State Highway 83 between Hemphill and Pineland.

Man wanted for capital murder of a baby in Nueces County arrested in Tyler County

KTRE 9 News in Lufkin is reporting that a man who was wanted on a 2017 capital murder charge for the death of a baby in Nueces County was recently arrested in Tyler County.

According to the report, 21-year-old Daniel Justin Ortiz was wanted for the December death of an 18-month-old girl, who was the daughter of his girlfriend.

Burkeville ISD Celebrates!

The Texas Education Agency released its accountability ratings this morning, officially assigning districts an A-through-F letter grade for the first time. Dr. Brant Graham, Superintendent of Schools said, “We do not embrace a rating or ranking of our schools based on a state test administered on one specific date. Our focus is to provide a quality education that far exceeds the limited parameters of this state accountability design. Our schools are so much more than one test; however, it would be wrong not to celebrate that all of our campuses and our district are fully compliant with the Texas Education Agency’s Accountability System standards for the first time, in a very long time. Our students, teachers, staff, parents, and board of trustees have worked very hard and that is what we are celebrating.”

Dr. Graham went on to say, “It’s hard to keep up with all the great news lately. There are so many reasons to celebrate right now.” Some examples just from the last few months include:

11 year old injured in crash, DPS says oldest person in the vehicle was only 13

The Texas Department of Public Safety says an 11-year-old boy was seriously injured in a Tuesday afternoon rollover accident in Tyler County, and the oldest person in the vehicle was only 13.

According to Sergeant Stephanie Davis, the accident occurred shortly after 2:00 on County Road 3000 near the Tyler County Sheriff's Department, just northeast of the city limits of Woodville.

Driver critically injured in collision with an 18-wheeler

The driver of a pickup truck was very critically injured in a late Tuesday morning rear-end collision with an 18-wheeler in Newton County. The crash occurred shortly before the noon hour on U.S. Highway 190 at Farm to Market Road 1012, about 1 mile west of the Newton city limits.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Stephanie Davis said "The 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on US 190 followed by a 2001 Toyota pickup truck.  The driver of the 18-wheeler moved into the left turn lane.  As the driver began to make the left turn onto FM 1012, his vehicle was rear-ended by the Toyota pickup truck".

Jasper County Sheriff’s Department non-emergency phone lines knocked out, 911 calls routed through Tyler County Sheriff’s Department

A telephone line that was knocked down, presumably by a large truck, on East Milam Street Tuesday morning resulted in non-emergency phone lines at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department to be knocked out.

It happened shortly before 9:00 and communications officials said the non-emergency telephone lines were not expected to be back up and running until the afternoon. However, as of early Wednesday morning all circuits were reported to be up and running.

Split votes gives JISD 3% raise, three trustees wanted more for teachers, four shot it down

In a split vote, the Jasper Independent School District Board of Trustees on Monday evening granted a 3% average raise to all employees. However, three board members wanted to freeze the salary for the top echelon of the district in order to give a little extra to the teachers and lower paid employees, but that scenario was shot down in a 4-3 vote.

The vote came after a lengthy discussion with Board Member Mark Durand asking many questions of the school district’s finance officer. Durand also noted that recent figures from the Texas Association of School Boards showed that the salary of administration was 7% above the average salary for school districts of comparable size in the study.

Dixie Freedom Colony awarded Texas Historical Marker

The Texas Historical Commission has awarded a Texas Historical Marker to the DIXIE FREEDOM COLONY. This marker was awarded through the Undertold Marker Program. This program was created to recognize subjects that are important to local and state history and might not otherwise be remembered. Recognition through this program is not easily achieved. Only 15 of these markers are awarded each year in the whole state of Texas.
