Two motorcyclists are continuing to recover following a weekend accident in southern Newton County. According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred at about 4:00 p.m. Sunday on County Road 4212 in the Hartburg Community, near Deweyville.
Deputies said four motorcyclists from Louisiana were traveling eastbound when the driver of the second motorcycle in the group lost control for an unknown reason. According to deputies, he started to roll over and then slid off of the roadway into the ditch on the north side of the road. Deputies said the driver behind him locked up his brakes and then lost control of his motorcycle as well, also going into the ditch and striking the other driver.
Deputy Kevin Norton was first to arrive at the scene, and he said the first driver sustained the most serious injuries. He was treated at the scene by first responders from the Deweyville Fire Department, and then flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Meanwhile, the second motorcyclist had less severe injuries, and he was transported by ambulance to the same hospital.
The names of the injured men were not available.
