KJAS News has learned that former Newton County District Attorney Robert Choate is dead, and reliable sources say Choate took his own life just south of Shreveport, Louisiana.
On Saturday, KJAS News spoke to Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Department Investigator Matt Ferguson, who confirmed that Choate was discovered deceased. However, Ferguson said that he could not release specific details about the case, and he emphasized that the investigation is continuing.
Ferguson said the investigation began when deputies were called to a location on, or near U.S. Highway 171 early Friday evening.
Choate was recently in the news when he suddenly resigned from his position in early October, following allegations of misconduct.
Choate was appointed by Governor Rick Perry in July 2010. Following his resignation, Governor Perry appointed Newton attorney Courtney Tracy on October 29th to fill Choate’s unexpired term.
According to Shultz Funeral Home & Crematory in Jasper: Visitation for Robert J. Choate will be Monday, November 18th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Private Graveside Services will be Tuesday, November 19th at Burkeville City Cemetery.
