KSHN News in Liberty is reporting that a Lufkin pastor’s wife and mother-in-law both died in a 2-vehicle accident in Liberty County on Thursday afternoon. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred shortly after 3:00 in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 59, just north of Cleveland in northern Liberty County.

DPS says 55-year-old Tana Roy, who was the wife of Denman Avenue Baptist Church Associate Pastor Kevin Roy, and Helen Stopak, 79, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Liberty County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Wade Brown. Troopers say neither woman was wearing their seat belts, and they were ejected from their vehicle.

Meanwhile, another passenger in the vehicle, 52-year-old Jenny Nunnally Young, of Bossier City, Louisiana, was wearing her seat belt, and she had only minor injuries.

Troopers say Roy was driving a 2003 GMC Yukon, and Avery Norman, of Point Blank, was driving a large commercial truck. According to troopers, Norman slowed down to make a turn, and Roy took evasive action to miss hitting the truck. Roy’s SUV then left the road, and overturned in the ditch.

According to the Denman Avenue Baptist Church website, Kevin Roy has served at the church since 1986.

It is being reported that Tana Roy was on the way to a Houston airport to leave for a vacation when the tragedy occurred.
