A manhunt is underway in nearby Newton County as Sheriff Billy Rowles and his deputies seek two suspects who escaped from officers early Friday morning.

Rowles said it all began around 2:00 am, when a resident of a home on the north side of Newton, heard someone trying to steal a side by side all terrain vehicle. Rowles said the resident was able to run off the thieves and force them to leave the ATV behind. However, a short time later an officer saw the same truck and trailer pulling another ATV. A chase began and before it was over the vehicle was stopped on Farm to Market Road 1004, near the Call Community, where one suspect was taken into custody and two others ran into the woods.

Rowles and his deputies are searching the area and are in the process of utilizing trained dogs from the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department in Leesville, which was called on for assistance.

Officers from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and also the Kirbyville Police Department are assisting in the effort.
