Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox says his deputies along with officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety have identified a Jasper man as the person killed in an auto crash that occurred early Friday morning near Hemphill.
Maddox said late Friday that after considerable research and investigation that the deceased had been identified as 39 year old Clifford Woods.
State Trooper Brent Murray filed a report, which said that the crash occurred at about 3:00, on Highway 83, east of Hemphill, when the westbound 2001 Jeep Cherokee Woods was driving, left the road and hit several trees.
The Toledo Chronicle reported that several people tried to rescue Woods from the vehicle but were unable to do so. The report went on to say that a nearby homeowner tried in vain to put the fire out with a garden hose.
Maddox said that the fire was very hot and that the vehicle was burned so badly that it took he and others most of the day to even determine the make or model.
