Sheriff's Report for Mon, May 23rd, 2016

Well, it appears that Summer time is officially here. I worked outside in the sun this weekend and it was H O T! The heat is probably here to stay for a few months so remember to drink lots of fluids when you have to be working outside and, if you can, do your work in the early morning and late afternoon. I know some of you have to put in 8, 10, 12 hours a day in the hot sun and I sure feel for you. Just try to take breaks and stay hydrated.

LC-M gets advantage of home playoff game

The date, time, and location of the Jasper/Little Cypress-Mauriceville 4-A baseball playoff game is now set. However, a coin flip has given the Battlin’ Bears a huge advantage over the Bulldogs.

Investigators say latest arson case matches all others, Jasper well above national average

Jasper Fire Marshal Mike Collier said on Friday that he and an investigator from the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office have concluded that the late Wednesday night house fire at 205 Cavin Street has something in common with all of the other arson cases in that neighborhood. It’s not something they found, but rather something that wasn’t present, and that is an accelerant, such as gasoline or lighter fluid.

Jasper firemen respond to second arson in one day

The volunteers of the Jasper Fire Department responded to what is believed to be the second arson fire in one day on Wednesday evening when they were dispatched to a home at 205 Cavin Street, on the south side of town.

Funeral set for resident of Jasper who died in Beaumont accident

Funeral services have been set for 56-year-old Linda Ann Renfro, of Jasper, who died in that bizarre accident that occurred on Monday afternoon on the north side of Beaumont.

Flames destroy firefighter’s home

A Wednesday afternoon blaze in Newton County has destroyed the home and possessions of a firefighter. The incident happened on County Road 4102 in the Trout Creek Community at the home of Newton Fire Department Assistant Chief Karen Smith Adams and her fiancé, Newton Firefighter Jason Landrum.

Former Pineland court clerk pleads out for 5 years’ probation, ordered to repay $36k

Sabine County District Attorney Kevin Dutton said on Wednesday that former City of Pineland Municipal Court Clerk Teresa Scott has entered a guilty plea on a felony theft charge, and a district judge has ordered her to repay approximately $36,000.00, which she stole while in her position.

Jasper motel damaged by fire, man arrested, he said “place filled with the devil”

One suite of a Jasper motel was destroyed by a Wednesday afternoon fire and several other units were damaged. Meanwhile, Jasper Police have a man in custody and they say he has admitted to setting the blaze.

Jasper woman killed in Beaumont accident, local contractor in serious condition
